Tony Hawk, a world famous professional skateboarder explained to its people, “I consider skateboarding an art form, a lifestyle and a sport. ‘Action sport’ would be the least offensive categorization”.

To tell you the truth, this is what exactly Skateboard is all about- an art, sport, lifestyle, creativity, freedom or any other name you want to give.

It is an action sport that requires lot of guts and passion to play. Not everybody with skateboard can go out and start playing on the road.

But…

The question still remains the same

What exactly is skateboarding all about in layman terms?

Skateboarding is an outdoor action sport in which you perform different kinds of tricks, flips, stunts with the help of wood board type equipment.

You have to move the board by pushing it on the ground while other foot remains on the board.

Once you have pushed enough to move the wood board you can put both your foot on the board and move in forward direction.

I think you now you have fair idea about “What skateboarding is all about?”.

Let’s talk about: How to make one?

Making your own skateboard from scratch is not as difficult as it used to be. With basic knowledge of wood board, glue, wheels, molded press etc. you can easily manufacture a professional Skateboard.

Before, we start learning- “How to design the board?” “What kind of material you need?” and to answer rest of your questions. I want you to know that; designing a skateboard requires patience, time and some creative skills.

Famous skateboarders use professional skateboard made with high quality material to perform advanced level activities.

I have already talked about the first and in this post- we will learn about the functionality, and use of these parts in the making of a skateboard.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”305″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508927819052{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]
  • Deck:

To manufacture a complete working Skateboard, you need lot of parts but there are few of them, without which you can’t really make a skateboard. And one of them is Skateboard Deck also known as longboard. This is the base of your Skateboard on which you stand with both your feet on the top of it. If you are first time buying a Skateboard deck you need to know few of the things such as- right size, shape, material etc. Usually, it depends on your height that “What skateboard size will be the right for you?” Skateboard comes in a size of 36 inches long; they are the long board, whereas the average size is lesser than longboard.

  • Trucks:

Skateboard Truck is the main component of Skateboard that is used at the bottom of the deck to support wheels and bearings to the deck. The trucks are made of up two other different parts: baseplate and hanger. Baseplate is a component in Skateboard that is directly attached to the hardware and screws it to the board.

Trucks play an important role in tricks and stunts you perform with the board. It maintains a proper grip to the longboard.

  • Wheels:

Wheels are the important structure of the skateboard that allows the skateboard to move from one place to another. There has been a great revolution in skateboard wheels and you can get them in all sizes from 48 to 60mm. The kind of wheels you need to buy for your skateboard depends on “What type of skateboarding you want to do?”

Wheels come in various shapes and sizes and you can choose the ones that fit to your need.

Essential-skateboard-parts

  • Bearings:

Another important unit of your skateboard used within the wheels to mount the axel. Without bearing the skateboard wheels can’t move on its own. As they need the support of bearings to eliminate the friction.

  • Grip Tape:

It is a paper like sheet used on the top of the deck to provide you the support grip with the skateboard. The tape is available in many different color such as black, silver etc. And you can choose any color or style of the tape. Irrespective of design, color you choose for the grip tape; it is a must have part for the skateboard.

These parts are the backbone of your skateboard. Without the help of these units you can’t make a working skateboard. So, before you think of designing your own skateboard make sure you have enough knowledge about these parts. The next thing is skateboard material. Usually, the complete skateboard is made of lot of parts and structures. And in above list- I have only mentioned few of them.

You will see some popular brand names from where you can purchase the materials for the skateboard.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”306″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508927834320{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  • Deck

The deck on which you put your feet is made up of plywood. Three layers of wood are stacked together with glue to design a plywood. They are available in various size and shapes. And you can select what is best for you. With advancement in products, there are many decks available that are made of aluminum, nylon and fiberglass. If you are a beginner in skateboarding; plywood is best for you. However, if you want to move to next level of skateboarding and want to try something extraordinary or creative you can go for the other materials as well.

  • Bolts and Nuts

They are the hardware stuff of your skateboard used to join the wood board to the trucks. It has no alternative, you have to buy bolts and nuts to design your own skateboard because without them there is no connection in the hardware and the board.

  • Aluminum

When you buy a skateboard, it has a truck attached to it. The truck is made of aluminum and good thing about using it on the truck is – it is not as heavy as steel. You can also choose titanium made truck which is a good alternative to aluminum in this case.

Aluminium-skateboard-truck

  • Riser Pads

Made of plastic, Riser Pads are an important part in skateboard which help you in avoiding the wheels bite and increase the height of skateboard. They are two solid plastic made material placed between skateboard truck and deck. You perform lots of tricks with the skateboard and riser pads reduce between the board and truck. It is helpful to avoid the damage of the wheels.

  • Skateboard Truck Bushings

Bushings are cylinder shape material in your skateboard. They come in orange color and the smallest thing you will see in your skateboard truck. You get two bushings with the skateboard one for the top and the bottom.

  • Kingpin

Kingpin is basically a bolt like above nuts and bolts. It fits within the skateboard truck. You can adjust the skateboard performance from truck by loosening the kingpin nut.

WHAT SIZE SKATEBOARD DECK DO YOU NEED?

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator sep_align=”center” el_width=”80″][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1505111673405{margin-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_column_text]The secret of pro-level skateboarding lies in the size of skateboard deck you choose. Knowing “How to skateboard” is not enough. Skateboard deck comes in various sizes from short, medium and long. You have to be crystal clear about the size of skateboard you purchase as deck size has direct impact on the performance.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”308″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508928163476{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Whether you are a beginner or pro it is always important to choose the right size of deck for the skateboard. And there have been lots of debates and discussions done on this topic. People have their own opinions according to their experience and knowledge. But in general, what is the average size of a skateboard deck that you need to buy.

This is what we will discuss in this article. But before I get to the details of the right size or shape, it is mandatory to know that there is no average size of the skateboard for everybody. The kind of skateboard deck you need depends on various factors. Skateboard decks come in a size of 7.5 to 8.25 inches of width.

WHAT-SIZE-SKATEBOARD-DECK-DO-YOU-NEED-

Height: The first and the most important thing you need consider while choosing the deck is your actual height.

    • Full Size: Full size skateboard is used by the skater over age of 13 with height: 5’3.
    • Mid-Size: 9 to 12 years old kid and height : 4’5 and 5’2 tall.
    • Mini: To all the kids with the age between 6 to 8 years old and height: 4’4 tall. The right deck width to choose will be 7 inches.
  • Micro Deck: For a kid of an age 5 years or older and height: 3’4 tall. The correct deck width is 6.5 to 6.75 inches.

Style

The second most important thing to consider when choosing the deck for your skateboard is the kind of skate boarding i.e. style or trick you want to perform. With ordinary skateboard you can’t do lot of tricks which you can – in an advanced level skateboard. And this is the reason, why most people choose go for a skateboard that gives you all the features to perform tricks.

If you have the right idea of both these things you won’t have any difficulty in choosing the best size of skateboard. However, even If one of the thing is missing you can go wrong with skateboard deck

CHAPTER 4

WHAT SIZE SKATEBOARD TRUCKS DO YOU NEED?

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator sep_align=”center” el_width=”80″][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1505111673405{margin-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_column_text]Most skateboarders don’t know exactly- “What a skateboard truck is all about?” All they know about truck is, a triangle shape component made of metal adjusted right at the bottom of the skateboard. Thing is- trucks are key part of the skateboard. It is as important as an engine to a car.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”309″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508928199467{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Are you finding it difficult to choose the exact size of truck for your skateboard? If yes, then keep on reading as I have best solution for this problem.

It is always nice to have a skateboard with high heights as that helps you in speed and tricks. But you can go wrong if you only consider high-height as your first preference to choose the best skateboard. Having a skateboard with exact size of truck is what you need. Let’s understand the types of skateboard trucks available:

  • High Height: Like I said before, you can’t always buy a skateboard truck with high height but you need to make sure – “What exactly you want to do with the product?” If your goal is to perform high speed tricks and flips. Then go for the high- height truck. The range of low high size trucks lies between 53.8 to 58mm.
  • Low: When it comes to stability; low height trucks are what you need according to experts. Skateboard trucks that comes with low height will provide you better grip and stability with the ground. Because they usually have small size wheels range from 46 to 49mm.
  • Average: You will need a standard height truck when you are already a beginner in skating. Though, standard size works best for all kinds of skating such as: street, park etc. It is recommended that you go with the ones that fits to your need. It goes between 50 to 53mm of height.

WHAT-SIZE-SKATEBOARD-TRUCKS-DO-YOU-NEED-

The next thing you need to consider while buying skateboard trucks is the width. It is must to have a truck that is equal to the width of skateboard. Along with that, hanger width and axle width must be measured too. A small margin of .125 is fine but not beyond that. Otherwise, skateboard will not give the stability and proper grip to the ground.

Often times people ask questions like “Whether the material of truck also affect the performance of the skateboard?”

Well…

It is actually true. The raw material used to design the skateboard have big impact on its overall design and performance. You will need to buy the construction material from a reputed brand that offers quality material. In spite of all these little info-bits it’s better that you also know “exact material you need” for the development of a skateboard truck. This include: Steel, Aluminum, Titanium and Magnesium.

Some of the popular brands that makes the best skateboard trucks are: Paris Truck Co., Royal, Thunder Truck Co., Tracker etc. All these things need to be consider when choosing the right truck for the skateboard if any of the point is missing it will affect the performance.

CHAPTER 5

WHAT SIZE SKATEBOARD WHEELS DO YOU NEED?

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator sep_align=”center” el_width=”80″][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1505111673405{margin-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_column_text]In this post, we will see – “What is a skateboard wheel?” “How does it work?” and “What is the right size of the wheels you need?” We will also talk about the performance which depends on the wheels size.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”310″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508928214394{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Skateboard wheels comes in various size, shapes and color. The width (diameter) of wheels affect the performance of your skateboard. So, you have to be careful when choosing one. Some people choose small size wheels while other go for the large or standard size. Practically speaking- it all depends on “what kind of skateboarding you want to do?” and style you want to perform. I will have discussed about the all the size in this article but first of all, let’s understand why diameter is the primary factor that needs to be considered for the wheels.

You will always want to buy a skateboard that gives you fast ride than slow. And the skateboard wheels are measured in their diameter. The bigger the wheels, the fast performance you will get.

  • Small Size Wheels: They comes in a range of 50-53mm. For beginner, this is the best wheels to choose as they are good with riding as well as trick. It is important to know that your riding will be affected by the kind of wheels you select for skateboarding. So, you should only go with the ones that fits best to your need and give you speed, stability and control over the skateboard.
  • Average Size Wheels: With 54-59mm range- Average wheels have best comfort and stability. Whether you want to ride on the road, park and ramps etc. This is a perfect choice for you.
  • Large Size Wheels: They are huge size wheels with 60mm+ and are used for long skateboards, especially designed for speed and rough skateboarding.

We have already discussed all different sizes of wheels now let’s understand what should be the most important things to know when choosing the wheels as per your need.

WHAT-SIZE-SKATEBOARD-WHEELS-DO-YOU-NEED-

Material

Skateboard wheels are made with polyurethane (somewhat different from ordinary plastic). Polyurethane gives you better performance over plastic wheels. The reason why manufacture uses polyurethane to make the wheels is because it helps in resistance while riding on the road.

Durometer

When it comes to wheels, you don’t only have to think about its size, material but also durometer. This is a parameter to measure resistance of your skateboard wheels. Whether you need to choose the soft or hard wheels totally depends on the kind of skateboard riding you do. You can also go with the skateboard wheels material rating as well wherein “A” points to the soft wheels.

Diameter

Now that we already know that the performance of your wheels is mostly affected by its size, quality, durometer. But how does the size (diameter) really affect the performance at all? Before we get to that point. Let’s first understand what kind of wheels you should purchase for the skating. Small wheels are better for slow riding whereas big wheels are the best choice if you want to do the fast riding. A wheel is part through which it covers the distance and it can be measured, and to cover larger distance in less amount of time, you will need bigger wheels. As small will take more time to cover the distance.

CHAPTER 6

HOW TO APPLY SKATEBOARD GRIP TAPE?

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator sep_align=”center” el_width=”80″][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1505111673405{margin-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_column_text]Grip Tape is available in many designs and colors. You can choose any Grip Tape that you find cool. But while applying the Grip Tape on the boards there are few things to keep in mind. As Grip Tape is very sticky kind of layer once applied can’t be taken back. Below is the process to do the same.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/6″][vc_single_image image=”312″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_width_type=”container_width” full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” css=”.vc_custom_1508928231773{padding-right: 9% !important;padding-left: 9% !important;background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Grip tape as we already know is an essential part of the skateboard that helps you in maintaining the stability of your foot on the board. Irrespective of “What kind of skateboarding you do”, grip tape is necessary otherwise you will lose the balance from the board. Grip taping skateboard is a complicated process and it is better to be careful in advance while doing so.

Below are the steps you need to follow to Grip Tape:

Part 1:

Cut-the-grip-tape

First of all, make sure the size of Grip tape is bigger and wider than the size of board. Though, you will cut off the extra part later on after applying it on the board. But do not use the Grip tape which is smaller in size to the skateboard.

Part 2 :

Grip-taping

Carefully remove the back-side paper from the Grip tape and start placing it on the end of the skateboard. This is the most crucial step of Grip taping, because you would not want to apply it incorrectly. You have to center it to the board very carefully as Grip tapes are extremely sticky. You will also need to remove the bubbles with the help of your hand.

Part 3: Use a skate tool or metal screwdriver to trace the outline of the skateboard.

Part 4: Patiently move from one end to another of the skateboard to remove all the extra spaces (bubbles).

Apply-grip-tape

Part 5: Use a razor or scissor to trim the extra Grip tape. Go from one edge to the next and cover all four edges to remove the scrap sides.

Few things you need to consider before applying the Grip tape:

Do clean the skateboard right before applying the Grip tape so that there is no dirt stick with it. You can use any clothe to clean but not the water.

Carefully use the knife or scissor while cutting the extra stuff from the Grip tape.

Don’t be in hustle while following the process.

I am going to help you to make your own skateboard in 24 hours. It will not exactly be as the professional or Plan B type skateboard but perfect enough to use in any spot such as park, street and ramps etc. While most skateboards require tons of material and accessories to design it completely, however, I have made this process totally simple for you. You can certainly make it look cool afterwards the board is designed. Below are the steps that are most commonly used by homemade skateboard makers:

  • First Thing You Need Is 6-9 Pieces of Plywood

You Need 6-9 Pieces of Plywood

The reason to buy 7 (average size) pieces of plywood is to avoid stress or damage to the long board. If you want you can also purchase 3 same size veneer wood. They are basically layers of plywood stacked together to make a solid plywood.

Once you have all the plywood, it’s time to gluing them on top of each other. A simple process to layers the wood is to follows the pattern below:

  • Face (the main wood)
  • Core
  • Crossband
  • Core sheet
  • Crossband
  • Core sheet
  • Face sheet

Please note that the average thickness of the deck should be 10mm.

  • Gluing Process

Gluing-Process

The next thing you need to do is gluing the plywood equally to each other in the above sequence. Take the two pieces of plywood and glue them together and keep following the process until you are done with all 7 plywood. Make sure that the plywood you have purchased is different in sizes so you find it easy to stack them in order. Pressing has to be done right after the basic deck is ready. Without pressing you can’t really make a skateboard deck. You can make longer or lighter deck as per you need.

  • Molding The Deck

Molding The Deck

Before we start with the molding, you have to make a rough design or template on paper to have a shape that you would like to give to the deck. You can use a press if you have to mold the deck and design it many ways. To buy a press you will have to spend money because press is expensive. It is nice to have one, especially, when you want to make a lot of skateboards.

You will also have to be careful with the pressure that needs to apply while molding the plywood.

  • Use A Router Tool To Trim The Extra

Router Tool To Trim The Extra

You will have to give a shape to each edge of the deck and router does the best job in this case. If your skateboard is out of shape or doesn’t have any design at all, it will affect the performance of your skateboarding; also it will not look cool.

  • Drilling The Holes

Drilling The Holes

This is an important part as you can’t really stick the wheels at their place without the holes. To make sure the holes are done on correct position use another skateboard for a rough idea.

  • Fix The Wheels & Truck

Fix The Wheels & Truck

Now that you are done with: plywood, gluing, molding and shaping; it’s time to attach the truck and wheels to your skateboard. Of course, the skateboard is incomplete without the wheels and they need to be placed at the right position.

  • Applying The Grip Tape

Applying-the-grip-tape

This is a difficult task as the Grip Tape is very stick. And you wouldn’t like to make a mistake while doing so. If you want you can use the graphics, colors on the skateboard as per your choice.
